Trade names: Basswood Origin: Europe Range: Limetrees are to be found all over Europe and well into the former USSR and are forested but not cultivated systematically. In Western Europe mainly found in parks and especially popular as the traditional tree to adorn village squares. Limetrees can live to be over one thousand years old. Uses: Veneers generally used for subordinate purposes, often as dyed veneers. Best known as a carving wood. Used also for making matches, pencils and drawing boards as well as clogs. Sculpture, carving and woodworking are the main applications for lime wood. Cause it can be processed in all directions. Basswood can also be used to produce charcoal and filter charcoal. In the past, coal from limewood has also been used to produce gunpowder and as a dental care product. Character: The Color of Basswood may vary from white, to yellow and also red. Basswood can be very easily and cleanly used when it is dry. Surfaces are very smooth. Particularly suitable as surface finishes are mat varnishes, oils and waxes which particularly highlight the grain of the wood and the whole workpiece. Particularities: The lime tree is known as a village tree. They can be over 1000 years old. The Linde in Schenklengsfeld is perhaps the oldest tree in Germany. They are estimated to be over 1200 years.
